Social Studies
The History/Social Science courses at NHS include History, Contemporary World Cultures, and the Social Sciences. These courses aim to prepare students to lead productive and fulfilling lives as responsible citizens in a diverse, dynamic, and interdependent world. The Social Studies
Department seeks to equip students with the knowledge, skills, values, and experiences necessary to understand and engage with local, national, and global communities.
To this end, the Newtown High School Social Studies Department is actively rewriting and updating all curriculum documents to a concept-based format, with the goal of completion by 2025. This approach emphasizes generalizations and broad concepts, enabling teachers to create a rigorous environment with high expectations that encourages students to take meaningful learning risks.
This initiative is supported through the Professional Learning Communities process. The Social Studies Department is aligning curricula and developing common formative and summative assessments across similar courses to ensure that all students have equitable opportunities to engage in comparable learning experiences. Many of these assessments are increasingly incorporating technology and collaborative elements to better prepare our students for the advancements and challenges of the 21st-century technological landscape.
To further enhance our offerings, we are introducing Early College Experience (ECE) courses in Psychology and Modern U.S. History, allowing students to engage in a college-like experience within their current classes and earn credits that may transfer to colleges.
We aim to cultivate global citizenship among our students, encouraging enrollment in courses such as Western Studies, Area Studies, American History, Economics, Civics, and other electives that provide diverse perspectives on the world.
